Major solo show of Wendy MacMillan’s work. This exciting exhibition brings together her sculptural, mixed media and collage practice in a dynamic exploration of the themes of death, religion, political conflict and gender positioning.
MacMillan weaves threads of contemporary and socio-historical narratives where individual and collective behaviour manifests through historical, cultural, textual, and iconographic ideologies providing a resolute and complex conceptual body.
Her works reflect notions of soft and rational tactics in the exchange of power. In the drawing back of the curtain, hidden protagonists eliminate and destroy the individual. Shadows of self and identity are presented for sympathetic scrutiny. Bait and Bleed references the theoretical military strategy and correlates it to soft power relations of cognition, perception and motor operations in a perpetual cycle of conflict.

MacMillan is a Scottish artist living and working in London. An Associate of the Royal
British Society of Sculptors. She has exhibited in Britain, Russia, Europe and America.

Curated by Iavor Lubomirov (ALISN) and Marisa Sage (Like The Spice)

This autumn, 2010, four galleries in New York and London will exhibit works by artists' assistants under the banner 'Off The Clock'. A collaboration between Like The Spice (New York) and ALISN (London), the series of exhibitions will feature work by Gary Doherty who has assisted Sir Anthony Caro, Allison Edge who has assisted Jeff Koons, Alison Gill who has assisted Gavin Turk, Matt Blackler who assists Gordon Cheung, Benjamin Deakin who assists Keith Tyson, Jenny Morgan who assists Marilyn Minter, and others. All of these artists have spent significant time working in another artist’s studio, creating works for major museums, art galleries, art fairs, important private collections and public spaces throughout the world. They have one thing in common: being chosen by other artists - a tacit insider industry recognition of their skills.

Artists have used assistants at least since the early days of the apprentice system in the middle ages. Since minimalism and Warhol (not to mention the boom in contemporary art prices) it has become increasingly acceptable for artists to have works made for them. Today a studio assistant's role can vary from office tasks and documenting work, to stretching and preparing canvasses, to creating art practically from scratch. Assistants' roles in artistic production are still almost always under the radar, as having work made to order flies in the face of long held (some would say anachronistic) romantic ideals.

Artists using assistants can expand their repertoire to include media they are not experienced in using; they can also produce more work, and faster. Studio assistants, whose main focus is physically making the work, are very skilled, often more expert at their particular techniques than their bosses.

In addition to works by the artists, each of the artist's employers has also been asked to provide a letter detailing their assistant's role in the studio to be presented alongside the work. Some are forthright, others more protective, others did not respond. Each response, or lack thereof, is telling, as some artists are more open about this system than others. Some are known for crediting the work of their assistants, or even representing their assistants' work as an agent. Other artists are less open, often requiring new hires to sign strict confidentiality agreements and not publicly acknowledging using assistants at all.

Many interested artists felt unable to participate in these shows due to concerns about their existing relationship with a current employer. Others had the full support of their bosses – in a humorous reversal of roles Alison Gill will spend a day making sculptures on site assisted by her erstwhile employer Gavin Turk, alongside whom she will be inviting the visiting public to a taste of the experience of assistantship. In one of the exhibitions, other artists who have assisted the assistants will also have a chance to show their work.

On both sides of the Atlantic, "Off The Clock" intends to clarify the business of the artist's assistant, and thus initiate debate on the obscure reality of assistantship in today’s art world. You are invited to see the work in each of the shows, form your own questions, and draw your own conclusions.

Every one of us has been an assistant of somebody, when the assistant comes of age they also will have their assistant.

You can be a bad assistant and a good artist or vice-versa, the luck or destiny to become an artist is the answer that time gives you.

The real assistant wants to take you out of the picture, because he / she is learning your abilities, the assistant is there to to please your desire and get paid for it by learning your will.

The best thing they can do is not to do the things your way but discover their own.

With every one that I work there is an exchange of energy ...I also learn.

Ben Deakin, and me.

I have known Ben since teaching him in the last year of his BA at Kingston University in 2000. Since then I have followed his career and he has kept an eye on mine. Working in my studio is more of a collaborative exercise than old-school assistantship. Some of what I ask Ben to do is banal but it is mostly an engagement with my work from his own position; practical help to prepare surfaces and draw out grids but also a discussion of how work is developing and how to address a studio practice to the complex and skittish nature of the art world. More than anything there is a form of paying attention to things that good painters know about regardless of their preferred areas of intellectual discourse; this is what Ben brings to my studio.

Andrew Bick, October 2010

Dear Iavor,

Ben Deakin was indeed an Artist Technician at Keith Tyson Projects, supporting Keith Tyson. He primarily painted but on occasion worked on sculptures too. He had a varied role and worked well under pressure to meet unrealistic deadlines. He's a very focused individual who worked well within the team of assistants but equally on his own.

Please let me know if this is sufficient.

Kind regards

Dear Iavor

thanks for your message and pleasure to do some legwork for Daryl

Yes, Daryl has worked for me quite a while. We now each other from University of East London where he was my student. He helped me a lot on large-scale projects like Sprout and Bean, exhibitions first in London, then in Germany, too. Most of my work demands repetitive movements, to put it mildly: Wrapping kilometers of cling film, rasping a 16 m long piece with a single-handed file or stretching miles of tape across the space until your eyes start juggling stripes. So it is kind of an endurance hell working for me. However, he is great at it, Skills 8, stamina 10. If I am in desperate need, he jumps over the channel with the plane to give me a hand for installing shows, kind of Ryanair sponsored Art-Roadie. And a sculptor on his own with his Neogeo-slapstick- Post-New-Sculpture-approach which I enjoy very much. Good luck and all the best

Thank you for enquiring about Gary Doherty and his time working with Anthony Caro.

He worked here for more than ten years. Anthony is more than glad to comment on his time working with Gary.

He says that ” he was a delight to work with and very good with colour. A really enthusiastic participant in the studio, willing, punctual. He was involved in a number of sculpture projects over the years. I worked with him a great deal.”

Hi marisa.

Jason Bryant, a former painting assistant to Kehinde Wiley for over three years, has applied his knowledge and precision into his current visual corpus. His contributions are obvious with his attention to detail in his approach to apparel, accessories, and reflective light.

Hope this helps

Good luck tonight

Hi Marisa,

Thanks for your message. Unfortunately, the timing of this is not really in our favor, as Roxy is in the middle of final preparations for his upcoming exhibition at our gallery space and I’m quite sure that he won’t be able to address this with the projects that he is trying juggle at this time. I’m sorry that I can’t be more helpful at this time. Perhaps we might have more luck later in October?

Dear Iavor, thanks for your email regarding Sy Hackney &#38; the Artists Assistants Show.

Sy has assisted me with several studio based projects and also assisted with the preparation &#38; hanging of various shows including providing valuable input with the admin/ paperwork attendant upon such enterprises:- you know all the usual assistant stuff, hes especially good with materials &#38; applications. Sy's a well motivated &#38; active artist himself, very committed to his own work, of which I am a great admirer, and an advocate for the promotion of visual arts in generaI.

As you probably know, good assistants are hard to find and I, therefore, look forward to a continued &#38; mutually beneficial professional relationship with Sy.

Regards

I - III, 2009

Dear Iavor,

Been away and not had acces to emails so easily in China.

Matt Blackner has assisted me in the production of works for my solo show at the New Art Gallery Walsall in 2009 and some studio building in 2010.

Thanks,

Gordon

Dear Iavor,

I can confirm that Matt Blackler has worked as my technical assistant since August 2009.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any further information.

Kind regards,

Ximena Garrido-Lecca

Dear Mr. Lubomirov,

Yes I have worked with Matt before. Apart from doing some maintenance work in the studio he has created a piece to install my work.

I needed to hang three sculptures from one point and he came out with the idea of how to it. The sculptures are about astronomical objects, so he constructed a metal structure with three poles resembling an astronomical model. Very clever and great execution.

The work is on exhibition at the Schering Foundation in Berlin until the 9th of October 2010. It looks amazing in the space and I am very pleased with his work.

I hope I have replied according to what you need, but if you have any questions please let me know.

Kind regards,
Fiorella

I can confirm that Matt Blackler printed an edition of 20 intaglio prints for me, for an exhibition at Calvert22 in 2008. The work was a difficult technical challenge, involving a cutting matt with scalpel marks. Other printers have turned down similar work from me before and since. Matt was professional and relentless and treated my work with the same attention he may have given his own. I certainly would not have been able to produce the work without him.

Dear Mr Lubomirov,

I can confirm that Matt Blacker has assisted me in the fabrication of my art work. Specifically, he produced a series of prints from a laser etching for me in Spring, 2009. The image was a drawing from the Pelican edition of 'Fact and Fiction in Psychology' by H.J. Eysenck, The drawing was a depiction of Pavlov's famous conditioning experiment, of a dog tied up to various equipment. The final print was called 'I'm Not in Love' and was exhibited in a three-part exhibition 'The Kiss of a Lifetime', presented in Manchester, London and Newcastle respectively.

The piece did not sell. Consequently, Matt is yet to receive remuneration for his work in this instance.

Yours truly,

Charlotte Young

The public is invited to join Gavin Turk in a one-day special event assisting Alison Gill in the making of her ongoing sculpture Fibonacci Rabbits Generator. All who take part will be credited alongside Gavin.

As part of 'Off the Clock'. Read the full exhibition listing...

Event Details
Alison Gill, familiar to many Londoners from the “100 Years, 100 Artists, 100 Words” posters on the underground, will spend the 7th of November working with the public as assistants on her 2003 Jerwood Sculpture Prize shortlisted project ‘Fibonacci Rabbit Generator’. Gill was employed as assistant to Gavin Turk from 1999 to 2001, during which time she worked on his bronze bin bags, boxes and the figure in a sleeping bag. In a twist of fate, her erstwhile employer will spend Sunday 7th of November with Gill, working as her assistant for the day and helping her to realise her own project. Two workshop spaces will be set up and the visiting public will be encouraged to join in as assistants on the project alongside Gavin. All participants will be credited as assistants.

Description
Fibonacci Rabbit Generator is a Floor-based sculpture, environmental in scale. It will consist of sets of identical cast modules, each one representing a pair of breeding rabbits. Each mathematical set of modules will correspond to a Fibonacci number [e.g. 1, 2, 3, 5, 8] and will be painted a colour of the rainbow-spectrum [red, orange, yellow etc.]. The sets will be laid out in the form of a family tree, inaugurated by a white rabbit module. There will be a minimum of fifty-four rabbits.

Idea
The supposition of Alison Gill’s enquiry hinges on mathematics representing growth in nature. The Fibonacci series was originated by Leonardo Fibonacci in his work Liber Abaci (A.D. 1228), were he refers to breeding rabbits. The sculpture will represent a hypothetical model of nature. It is a hypothetical model because in reality rabbits do not breed with the systematic fecundity the Fibonacci series proffers and yet the proportional geometry utilising the Fibonacci series does correspond to many harmonious natural growth forms such as spiral shells and galaxies, and was explored in another of Alison Gill’s sculptures – ‘Transporter’ – also previously exhibited at the Jerwood Gallery. By adding one number to its predecessor exponential growth is implied. Potentially, or in the mind of the viewer, the work extends for infinity. This exploits the misconception about the breeding rates of rabbits that often greatly exaggerate their reproductive power.
The tropes of wonder: rainbows, albinos and ‘the white rabbit’, all have popular currency in the imagination and rarity in ‘the wild’. Their emblematic, striking visual and physical presence within the sculpture will invite yet another playful detour in the internal space of the viewer embracing both the imaginary and logical realms.

They have such lost, degraded souls, No wonder they inhabit holes. (Anonymous)
Few animals have acquired such an extraordinary, controversial reputation. The humorous and emotive image of the sculpture will recognise this, linking the mathematics of the Fibonacci series with cultural, historical and biographical references.

Artists' Reception: Wednesday 30 March 6 - 9pm
Exhibition Dates: Friday 1 April to Saturday 9 April
Open: Tue to Fri 6 - 8 pm, Sat &#38; Sun 2 - 8 pm

Tower Hamlets Spring Open is a survey of the large and diverse artist community living or working in the borough of Tower Hamlets. Held in the 5000sqft Mile End Art Pavilion, the exhibition is selected and curated by Iavor Lubomirov and Anna Bleeker of ALISN, William Hughes of Angus-Hughes Gallery, Charlie Dutton of Charlie Dutton Gallery, and Paul Good and Kirsty Wood of SHIFT.

ALISN invited artists living or working in Tower Hamlets to submit work with a particular emphasis on large-scale ambitious projects, sculptures, or installations in all mediums, including performance, video, sound and photography. The resulting selection reveals a range of unexpected undercurrents, with much of the work resonating particularly with the architecture of the borough and the gallery.

Christina Mitrentse is a Greek artist, living and working in London, with a studio in Tower Hamlets. She took her MA at Chelsea in 2004. Her work has been included in public and private international collections, including the Tate Archive, the Greenwich Heritage Museum, the Zabludowicz Foundation and the Onassis Foundation. Mitrentse’s sculpture at the Pavilion, ‘Beethoven versus Mozart’, is part of an on-going project ‘Add to my Library’, in which books from her collection are Twisted and stuck together to create organic, yet architectural structures of small scale ‘Podiums’, ‘Tombs’, ‘Plinths’ and ‘Bibliophile’ collages or Fungies.

Eve Allen is currently completing her Fine Art BA at Saint Martins. Her work uses and reuses photographs of domestic interiors and fragments of buildings as source material for evoking memory and a sense of the uncanny inherent in represented space. Her print work, ‘Staircase Going Down’, at the Pavilion, relates to architectures that don't fulfil their function and undermine what they are supposed to be.

Gareth Barnett is currently completing his MA at Saint Martins, having moved to Tower Hamlets from Birmingham. Quoting references such as Conrad Jameson’s branding of modern architects as 'war criminals', Gareth engages Brutalist Dystopia as the setting of the perfect horror film. His 16 panel, 70sqft, wall piece from the series ‘Brut Camp’ explores feelings of control and domination within the urban environment. It is made from a mixture of pencil drawing, xeroxed drawings and concrete rubbings taken from the Balfron Estate in East London, a original Brutalist site designed by Erno Goldfinger.

Harry Meadows took his MFA at Goldsmiths in 2007 and has since shown at the Barbican, the BBC Big Screens and the Royal Festival Hall. Meadows works from a post-historical perspective informed by Russell Hoban’s 'Riddley Walker' and William Morris’s 'News From Nowhere', combining relics of design with an irreverence for ideology. His videowork ‘News From Nowhere’ reads like a contemporary take on Manet blended with the aesthetic of a games console screen saver. The peculiar cultural character which he creates offers the viewer a reflective catharsis challenging nostalgic identity.

Julia Crabtree and William Evans are the founders of the influential 10,000sqft James Taylor Gallery. Created as a respite from the traditional "white cube", JTG have been providing a non-commercial platform for emerging artists and curators to engage in ambitious large-scale projects inside a sprawling Victorian warehouse. Their response to the Pavilion takes the form of a disruptive sound-art intervention investigating the sculptural potential of sound within the architecture of the space. Scattered speakers placed facing the ceiling, emit evolving sounds of water drops, while suggesting themselves as containers for collecting the invisible leaks thus created in the gallery’s underground structure.

Lee Holden took his MFA from Reading in 1999. Lee Holden’s work deliberately draws out the normally suppressed connections between areas such as drug abuse, violence, homelessness, poverty and unemployment. For the Pavilion Lee Holden will produce a site-specific artwork responding to the powerful quotidian influence of contemporary mainstream culture, focusing in particular on media-coerced psychosis fed on emotional well-being needs. Utilising found materials and audio video footage, Holden aims to disturb any apparent sense of calmness within the Pavilion and its park surroundings.

Lorna Pridmore studied Fine Art at the John Cass in Tower Hamlets' Metropolitan University. Her work centres on the use of everyday found objects, which tend to have clear masculine or feminine connotations. Her evolving, conceptual sculpture ‘Untitled’ is made from a growing mass of hairgrips, thus incidentally using the language of quantity and volume which the space imposes, whilst also remaining one of the smallest objects in the exhibition.

Lucy Tomlins is currently in the first year of her Sculpture MA at the Royal College. Her apparently light-hearted entry 'Made, unmade, remade', draws on the domestic to ask questions about the slippery boundary between the functional and artistic. The work takes as its starting point the remaking of a grinder for seeds, grains and spices: a tool that has remained rudimentary, simple and functional throughout the centuries.

Mark Selby took his MFA in Sculpture from Wimbledon in 2008. His work explores the methods, symbols and structures through which we communicate, using sculpture, installation and film and ranging from hand-made, DIY parodies of technology-based products, to creating entire fictional spaces. In this exhibition Mark presents his sculpture ‘Listen To Me’, a skewed piece of domestic reality with defunct megaphones, and a video work ‘Beacon’ which centres itself around a well known suicide spot in Cornwall.

Rab Harling took his MA in Photography from LCC in 2010 and is currently interested in concepts of commodity reflected in billboards, particularly empty ones. His work is a large piece of photographic wall-paper of a haunting Tower Hamlets cityscape from his series ‘Abandon Your Dreams’.

Toby Poolman originally trained as a furniture designer and has worked as a skilled carpenter on buildings conservation for the British National Heritage. In 2009 he took his MFA in Sculpture from Bath with distinction and has since moved to London with his narrowboat, which is often moored in Regents Canal in Tower Hamlets. In the Spring Open he engages the landscaped setting of the space with a site-specific, interactive installation. Titled ‘Three Dunes’, the work creates artificial sand dune structures inside a 100sqft area of the Pavilion.

		<description>Sunday 3rd April 2011: 12.30 – 4pm

&#60;img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/156697/2125604/01.jpg" width="670" height="422" width_o="670" height_o="422" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/4/156697/2125604/01_o.jpg" data-mid="10599984"  border="0" align="left"/&#62;

Thousands of artists live and work in the London borough of Tower Hamlets. It is home to hundreds of galleries and artist-run spaces; two Fine Art faculties at London Metropolitan University and Queen Mary University; and important cultural hubs such as Brick Lane and the Whitechapel Art Gallery.

Twelve of the most exciting artists from the borough have been selected by four London art galleries for the Tower Hamlets Spring Open Exhibition. The show opens on Wednesday 30 March in the Mile End Art Pavilion – a public Art Gallery, built around a sumptuous artificial lake as part of the Millennium Regeneration of Mile End Park.

Latitudinal Cuisine and ALISN invite you to a Sunday Lunch for 200 guests, together with the artists and gallerists. This is a unique opportunity to dine on the longest table you have ever seen, in a wonderful purpose-built space, and to be part of a vast and buzzing private event where you can meet and eat with the exhibiting artists.

Latitudinal Cuisine is a social networking platform based on the sharing of culture through food. For this event, participants are asked to each prepare and bring a dish (enough for 4) and drink representing their
cultural background. At the lunch all guests will be given the opportunity to present their contribution to the gathering, and then to share in this wonderful co-created feast.

Places can be booked at www.eatwithart.eventbrite.com/

There are three types of ‘ticket’: choose Starter, Main or Dessert according to the type of dish you wish to bring.

Tickets are £7 per head to cover the costs of hire and transport. All bookings are on a first-come first-served basis and non-refundable.
